After a multi-year, time wasting, but enjoyable experiment, I’ve got them down to 4.5 tunings
1) GCEACE (C6)
2) EGDGBD (G6/Em7)
3) GBDFAD (G9, Dm over G7)
4) DBDF#AD (D6)
The .5 tuning is b0b’s GM7 (D over G) GBDF#AD
It connects with me more than any other tuning, but every time I’ve tried it so far the F# messes me up when playing in major keys with string 6 as the root.
Currently, I am enjoying C6 tuning, but can (finally) switch comfortably between any of those 4 tunings.
(edited to include C6, 12/30/2021) _________________ Current Tunings:
6 String | G – G B D G B D
7 String | G6 – e G B D G B D (re-entrant)

In a moment of weakness (they occur fairly often) I tried C6 on my 7-string lap steels, G C E G A C E, and liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
For 6-strings, C6 (G C E A C E), which I struggled with in the past, is now working for me. Yipee!
I'm finding it works better for blues than I remembered (have I actually improved over the years?) |
