Yet Another Quilter TB 202 Thread

I must confess to being pleasantly stunned by how much I like the Toneblock 202. I bought this a couple of months ago as an upgrade to my emergency back-up, throw-in-the-trunk-of-the-car amp, with no intention of actually using it much. I soon started feeling foolish to have sunk $600 into an amp I wasn't using; even considered selling it and sticking with the DV Mark Little 250, which was very good in its own right.

I decided to get a dedicated 12" cab, try some speakers, and see if this wouldn't be an acceptable 1x12 amp option. Based on extensive reading of gear-page reviews and the personal experience of a nearby steel buddy, I opted not to go with the Quilter Blockdock for a cab. Instead, I ended up running it through a Fender SC112 closed-back cab loaded with a Weber 12F150 (8 ohm).

Holy Moly! This thing sounds exceptionally good. Great Fender-y vintage tone and rock-solid bass response. Now I just need to wait for the latest wave of plague to subside (greetings from NH: leading the nation on Covid rates!!) so I can start picking up small-venue gigs again. Not that this rig wouldn't be plenty loud for larger rooms, but for those gigs I still want the feel of an open-back, 2x12 cab that I get with my Tonemaster Twin.

I too have been wanting to try a 12" cab and speaker combo with my TB202..... All of my cabs are loaded with 15" various brands of speaker.

I have been reading up on the 12" speaker world looking for a speaker that can handle the higher wattage output and one that has great tone reviews......

Love the TB202 sound, just want to do some 12" experimenting.

The speaker cabinet can play a major part in speaker response.

I bought a used Peavey Nashville 112 that had a Telonics NEO 12 speaker. I also had a Travis Toy 12 speaker. both the Telonics and TT12 are made by Eminence and very similar.
Installed in the NV112 cabinet the Telonics had a little more end.

I bought a Quilter Travis Toy 12 combo amp. I still had the Telonics speaker so I installed it in the Quilter "Blockdock 12" cabinet that is used in the Travis Toy combo. It was the opposite, the TT12 had more low and over all a slight edge over the Telonics. However, to be honest either speaker would be OK with me in either amp set up.

As I've posted before, I think the TT12 is the best steel amp I've had since a Fender Twin I bought in 71.

Through an open back pine cab with a pair of D-120’s it’s the best solid state steel guitar amp I’ve ever heard, and I’ve tried most of them.

I really like my TB 201, which is the predecessor to the 202. I guess a lot of players have to have traditional treble/mid/bass controls, but honestly, I just use the Full Q setting, which is pretty much flat, and it sounds great. I might mess with the Tri-Q if I need a bit of mid cut/boost, or High-Cut if the room is really lively. But as Jack says, it has a lot of the old Fender sound. I turn up the mid on my Twin Reverbs anyway.

I use 12" speakers with mine - I have a few cabs with different style speakers. One Eminence Redcoat that takes about 70 watts if I'm not gonna be too loud, a Telonics cab with a 12", I think 300-watt, 4 Ohm Telonics Neo in it, and one with a, I think, 250-watt Furlong 12" 8 Ohm Neo in it. The Redcoat cab has the option to be either open or closed-back, the other two are open-back, I leave it closed. If I need to be loud, I bring the two 8 Ohm cabs. Lately, I've been putting a Peavey Studio Pro 50 on top of one of the cabs and running them both for triple duty - pedal steel, guitar, and slide guitar. I just use the Peavey for guitars, but run them both for steel. Filled up a pretty good-sized room for a couple of nights a week ago in a band that is not ridiculously loud, but definitely not quiet. Good, moderately aggressive drummer, some classic rock & modern country material included, nobody had any problem hearing me. People were coming out of the woodwork saying how happy they were to be able to hear pedal steel in a country band. Cool

I love my TB 202. I use it for recording and as a spare amp on gigs.

On gigs, I play through a Steelaire. Occasionally I will disconnect the speaker in the Steelaire and connect the 202 to the speaker using a custom made cord. The 202 though the Steelaire speaker and cabinet is pretty awesome. The sound is warmer and very slightly overdriven when cranked... not a nasty tone, but a warm tone. And the reverb in the 202 sounds great IMO. The Steelaire, on the other hand, stays clean even when the Gain and the Master are both up to 7 or 8. Both amps sound great IMO.

I use a Quilter 101 and a TC Electronics G major for effects. Cab is a open back 12 with a TT speaker. Couldn't ask for a better tone. Settings on full Q with the Tri Q at 11 o'clock and highs cut a bit. It's loud and clean and weights nothing. Volume is adequate for most gigs.

I love diversity of experience and of opinion. I gigged my Micro Pro 12 HD for 3 years. I liked it a lot. But not so much that I wasn't wondering if I could find improvements to a couple of things. So I was very curious about the TT202. It was quite good but it never 'spoke to me'. I am committed to gigging with a combo amp so I did not explore driving other speakers/cabs.
I just recently got an Aviator Mach 3 and THIS speaks to me. I am digging it a lot. Gigs have dried up some so I haven't taken it out yet but I am expecting this to become my new gig rig. The great news for me was that I found someone local to buy the TT12 and he was there trying it out and buying it the very day that the Mach 3 arrived. Gotta love the universe in sync.

Jon, I still have a Quilter Micropro mach 2 HD and it's fine for guitar but for steel I use it with an old Crate 12 inch cabinet with a Celestion speaker. Together they sound awesome. The extension adds some depth the tiny Quilter cabinet lacks. It's impressive how they work together.

I have a TB202 with the Blockdock 12(not with the TT speaker) and like it a lot. I do have a TT12 that I will drop in there eventually. I also have a couple Aviator 8s and an Aviator head. Amazing low end for it’s size. They sound great with or without an extension cab. I’m a Quilter Nut!
