Heya, I have been going through the forums trying to sort through info on the Fender Lap steels of the 50s/60s. And a bit confused about concise information.
I've seen some of the older Fenders with the Trapezoid pick up, and some of the other ones that are called deluxe, but look like stringmasters?
What's the difference on them all between:
Fender Champ
Fender Deluxe
Fender Deluxe 8
Fender Stringmaster
Fender D10 Stringmaster?
Fender d8?!!?!?
Forgive my ignoramus question.
Also, what was used for Johnny & Santo's Sleepwalk... a Fender Deluxe with trapezoid? were there 8 strings of those made? I read that one of the pictures taken were with a newer model which wasn't available at the time.
Eying the one on the for sale forum... and as I'm a silly bugger, as soon as I get a job offer I end up buying another lap steel. Then one seems to come every month or so following that ... I should probably be investing in stocks/cryptos. But you can't play stocks/cryptos! |

Sleep Walk was on a dual eight with traps as far as i know, he got the Stringmaster later. The Deluxe is a single neck that came with 6 or 8 strings.

From what I've read on this forum and elsewhere, he used a Fender with trap pickups but it was the Custom, with 3 necks. Probably this one...

Here’s a video of Santo using his T8 with trapezoid pickups (so Custom T8?) playing Sleep Walk on American Bandstand. I suspect this was the instrument on the original recording.
