i have a congenital hearing loss (my father and sister have it too) but mine has been greatly exacerbated by being a rock 'n' roller and concert goer for many years (my first show was Cream in 1968).
So I have Oticon Opn hearing aids that compensate for my loss of high frequencies. They are fabulous and have allowed me to hear what I was missing at work and in social situations (although my wife insists there's a "I Can't Hear You, Dear" setting).
The problem was that when I wore them practicing the third string was so shrill that it caused me to fiddle with the treble controls on my Fender Steel King, and it was never a perfect solution.
I mentioned this to my fabulous audiologist and she said "Why don't you bring you pedal steel to my office and I'll calibrate a setting for you." She was able to isolate the range of frequencies of my PS and dial in a computerized setting (one of four) that I can select with my hearing aids. A fabulous solution!
When I play out I take the hearing aids out and use Minuendo Lossless Earplugs. They are adjustable for the amount of decibel reduction.
Gotta take care of the ears! _________________ MSA Millennium SD-10 #22, Fender Steel King with Eminence EPS-15C speaker, Lehle Mono 90 Volume Pedal, Sarno Black Box, Baby Bloomer, Sarno Earth Drive, EHX Mel 9, EHX Small Stone, Mooer Chorus, Keeley Caverns, Clinesmith bar, Acri picks, Nioma lap steel, Regal resonator, and a whole bunch of other instruments. |

Amazing story! Glad you have a great audiologist that was willing to go the extra mile to find the solution! _________________ Sierra Session U12, Milkman 1/2, Goodrich Omni, Divine Noise Cables, BJS, Solid cosmic gold, baby πΆπ» |

That is cool. I just turn mine to the lowest volume setting so I get a little treble boost and it sounds good. If it's just too loud a stage volume, I don't use them at all and know that I'm playing treblier than I perceive and adjust accordingly. _________________ Emmons SKH Le Grande, '73 Fender P/J bass, Tick tack bass, Regal high strung, USA Nashville 112. |
