What is the main difference or reason for the first, fifth and sixth strings in the Nashville and Standard E9th Strings to be of a difference size?

What is "standard"? The closest I can associate "standard" is the Nashville/Sho-Bud gauges. Most string companies sell Nashville/Sho-Bud gauged strings.
Some sell other variations such as "tension balanced", Signature gauges from Buddy Emmons and other players. More than the 5th and 6th string gauges can be different. |

I think "Standard" and "Nashville" are pretty much just marketing terms. The only significant differences in string sets is whether or not they have a wound 6th string, and whether or not the wound strings have a stainless or nickel-plated wrap. While some differences in gauges do exist for many brands, it's more or less personal preference what you use. Some guitars just happen to work better with certain string gauges, while other (more modern?) guitars seem less finicky. |
