Is open D favoured over Open E, are they not played the same, just E is higher in pitch?

For a while I had open D on my Dobro, and open E on my lap steel, just based on a different scale length and what felt good. C6, and other tunings, are where there are a dozen variations with subtle or not subtle differences, but mostly people know what you mean when you say "open D".

They are the same intervals, played the same way, but the difference in pitch matters. It comes down to personal preference.

The lower pitched D rends to give a nice growl for blues, and generally has lower string tension for a looser feel. (Keeping in mind that string tension is easy to modify via string gauge selection). Open E tends to feel tighter and maybe “sweeter”. It is also a bit easier for players used to guitars in standard tuning, since the fretboard root positions are the same.

Open D for me as base tuning. I capo up 2 for E. I like it that way.

If you're into DADGAD, a half step tune up of the 3rd string puts you there.

Open D and open G are popular bottleneck tunings for an acoustic guitar with medium gage strings. That's where a lot of us began, and migrated to lap style later.
