I was watching one of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Showcases that Alan Akaka hosts in Hawaii. I was looking for a little inspiration. At the end of the showcase John Ely played a set from a few years ago. I was really impressed. What a great musical player. I had heard of him but not really seen much from him. I searched YouTube and was surprised by the lack of content by John. I managed to find a version of Flamingo online that John Ely had arranged. I have tried to play this as much as I can in the style of John Ely. Backing made with a Tenor Ukulele and a Ukulele bass.
I did find his website and sent him an email regarding purchasing any arrangements as and when he his ready to publish more.
What a great player!
Mike

Well played, Mike!

John is a super guy and an awe-inspiring steel player.

Here's John in a Spyro Gyro-ish context - an unusual place for lap steel ....

Thank you Ethan.

Andy I think it maybe your post that I found the Tab for Flamingo. I found the Spyro Gyro type tune when I was searching for John Ely playing on YouTube. A great player in my opinion. Would love to find more material by John!

That's pretty sweet, Mike. I like the maj7 chords in the song and how nicely they lay out on C6 tuning.

Doug. Thanks again for your kind comments. What I have noticed is partial chords like the Maj7 just come alive over a backing track!

Thank you Steve. It is a beautiful song particularly well suited to Steel Guitar!

I love the concept of Flamingo as a beautiful chord melody ballad as John arranged it but I also dig what Earl Bostic did with it back in 1951. I did an R&B arrangement in C6th a year or two ago based on Bostic's arrangement.

John Ely by far is my favorite player. He drilled me with his lessons weekly. for quite a few years. I hope I made him laugh, I probably was the most nervous student in his cache and I don't mean storing provisions Laughing He was so patient with me and it turned me into a fairly good playing lap steeler. A thoughtful person. Ethical to the point I could never pull the wool over his eye's. He caught everything, and this was on Skype. John if you see this, you need to share your beautiful songs once in awhile so we all can enjoy them!

Hi Ralph, Walter is correct. I got the arrangement from the Andy Volk post above. I then subsequently made a backing track with a ukulele and Uke style bass! I would love to see more of Johns arrangements!
