Any thoughts on the comparison of these two guitars?
Encore is 3 & 5, Discovery is 3 & 4
Is Discovery easily and affordably able to add vert lever?
How about sound quality diff? Tunability? Are both all-pull changers?
Just curious

Hi John, I haven't played an Encore so can't give you a comparison between the 2 but have owned a Discovery for over 2 years now so here are my thoughts: I purchased mine at the Dallas steel show(demo model) with 3 & 5. Later, I installed a 4th pedal myself. Was very easy with no problems. I'm sure the vertical knee lever is easy to install and affordable. Again, I don't know about the sound quality difference but can tell you the Discovery sounds great. I've used it for online sessions and it's full and clean with a nice midrange. The tuning is also great. No compensators are needed and everything returns true, even with the Franklin change. It's an all-pull changer with triple raise, double lower. I think it's an additional cost but mine also came with split tuners. A device that's attached on the end of the changer. I just want to add, it has wonderful sustain and it plays smooth and easy as well. It's a great steel. |

Thanks Dale,
Much appreciated friend. I'm hoping to buy an Encore and I just wanted to know what others thought of the Discovery in comparison. I don't think anyone makes those crappy Maverick/Carter Starter level guitars anymore as the designs have evolved a long way from when I started playing steel in the 80s. I've had several steels up to and including Zums, Emmons and Mullen. I just miss playing so I'm looking to get back in reasonably inexpensively for my own enjoyment but I don't want impossible tuning and cabinet drop issues I had with lesser expensive guitars in the past. So your Discovery has held up and stays in tune? Thanks, JB _________________ Jb in Ohio

Loved the Encore I had.
Justice also deserves a look in that price range. |

To answer your last question, Yes, the Discovery has held up well. I haven't had to replace any parts or make any adjustments to the undercarriage or at all, for that matter. It stays in tune very well and again, with no over return issues. Basically, tunes as good as my G2. It's a professional, lightweight guitar. |

It's a big world of variables and taste, but I liked the Encore sound much more than the Discovery. It wasn't as tight and precise feeling- Mullens may be the best machines being built now- but I went with sound. Worth mentioning- Doug Earnest's Zums are the only new guitars that regularly sell for more used than the new cost. |

I will say that of all my steels, my Mullen RP was the most precision machine of them all, including my Emmons LG III.
I don't expect that kind of precision at the price of an Encore, but I have owned the StageOne and even that was a far cry better mechanically
than some of the steels I have had in the past.
I figure the Encore will keep this old picker busy and able to do a show or two a month without breaking the bank or my lower back _________________ Jb in Ohio

Kudos to Doug for building a superior guitar. After playing professionally for 50 years I never would have thought that my go-to guitar would be a guitar like the Encore. |

I know what you mean. It took me 40+ years to figure out that big names or bells and whistles and trim or other shiny stuff doesn't make a great guitar. I have MANY Telecasters and the one I use most is a simple old Mexican made one from 1997. Nothing fancy at all, in fact with the lesser tuners and the cheap tailpiece it should be a nightmare compared to my American Teles, but it tunes, plays and sounds better than the expensive ones. I just want a simple 3&5 steel that does the job. I think the Encore will do just that, let me enjoy playing instead of bragging on my bling. I'm really hoping to have Doug make me one. _________________ Jb in Ohio
