My old reliable MB200 finally died after playing bass for a couple hours with it driving 4 ohms and the volume dimed. It just went out. When I tried to power back on, red light, then blue briefly, then off. Now, nothing at all.
So, it was sort of a gradual death in a way. I mean, it died suddently, but then exhibited changing symptoms when trying to re-power.
I'll put it on the bench to look for obvious problems. Hopefully I can find the schematic somewhere. I have the tools for surface mount rework if I need to.
But I wonder what GK's repair policy is? I'm guess their repair would be more than the value of the amp.
Maybe I can buy the guts somewhere cheap?
This was my go-to amp for bass gigs, and I used it with steel to good effect also. I hate to see it go... _________________ "You call that thing a guitar?" |

Could it have been a thermal shut down?
Might fire up if you let it cool down for a while?
Just grabbing at straws here. |

Well, it must have been a thermal shutdown because I tried it today and all is well!
After it died, I did wait 30 min to an hour and tried again, with same results.
But today, after it setting in a cold building overnight and getting it home, it works ok.
I'll bench test it with a dummy load for a few hours before I rely on it again. Thanks for the help, guys! _________________ "You call that thing a guitar?" |

That may be a common problem with these units. While playing the "Always Patsy Cline" show a few years back I was using my 'MB 200' and it began exhibiting the same problem by cutting out unexpectedly during the performance even though it was on a low volume setting. After a short shut down period, it would resume operation. The bass player for the show mentioned that the one that he owned had the exact same issue. |
