I think Rob Porter deserves a mention here on the forum. When I was a kid in Sydney, Australia, Rob filled that fairly rare job-description, that of the steel guitar player in pop-rock and roll music. The instrumentals were dominated by the Ventures and the Shadows, and Rob cut through all that with his own sound on the venerable Rickenbacker B6.

Rob is unsung hero of lap steel. I dig his music. What happened later in Rob's career?

I did an off the cuff version of that tune a few months ago, just winging it over a backing track for fun. https://soundcloud.com/aev/jezebel-lap-steel-e9th-tuning

I've heard a couple of his songs but never knew who Rob EG was until now so thanks. I found this gem after a bunch of searching:

That slightly over-driven and distorted tone Rob got on Jezebel was somewhat innovative at a time when the clear sound still dominated guitar recording. I am not saying he invented it, but it does presage what was about to happen a couple of years later, on records like "Psychotic Reaction," and "Satisfaction." Remarkably, its the basis of the tone that has stuck with the tenacity of bathroom mold to every other guitar video on YouTube 60 years later.
