Topic: 3rd string (G#) issue |

I have a ZumSteel U-12. The high G# 3rd string will not stay on the guitar. It is looks like it is slipping off the short peg at the bridge. If I hold the ball-end of the string down while putting it on, the string will eventually just pop off. Sometimes it will stay on a for a minute or two, but then again just pops off the bridge end of the guitar.
It is a beautiful sounding guitar but this is super frustrating. Thank you in advance for considering this,

| You might check to determine if the pin has become loose, under pressure it may move just enough to allow the ball to slip. Try gently wiggling the pin with your finger when string is detached. |

Is the pin bent or part broken off? This is pretty unusual for a pin in good condition.
Just make sure you get a good bend in the string over the roller finger and keep the ball pushed back against it as you tighten it.
Otherwise, you may need to have a professional repairman evaluate the issue. |

It only takes one time for someone to not bottom the ball on the pin, and the pin will get bent. Some builders don't always incorporate a slight angle to the pin which will almost guarantee the string to pop off.

Is it a solid pin or Roller pin? (Roller pin has small hole in center of pin and slot where the sides meet.)
A roller pin with the slot will sometimes collapse if string is not solid against body when pressure is applied.
Sometimes people will bend the pin so there is better holding power, If the pin turns 180 degrees then the string will not stay on, Just pop off.
Be careful not to break pin in process of removing. |

Thank you to those folks helping me out here. The pin on a ZumSteel is really short as opposed to other guitars that I have owned. I finally got the string on and tunes up by diligently holding down the string ball while I cinched up the string. It has held and now the guitar is playing beautifully like a ZumSteel should.
I believe that Bruce designed the guitar with short pins thinking that the string would be bound tighter to the bridge.

The whole notion of 'pins' makes me uncomfortable. I've had a couple of guitars with the swallow-tail fitting and these fill me with much more confidence; they make for a faster string-change, too.
Having said that, I confess that I've never had an issue with a pin breaking, despite my fears. I suppose it's the knowledge that, should it happen in the middle of a show, I'd be dead in the water and I'd need a steel-tech to sort it out. I've read a description of what's involved in the 'fix' and it's way beyond my pay-grade!
