Hello Steeler,
Can anyone tell me who's the artist that played the steel music and what tuning in John Wayne's 1960 movie Donovan's Reef?
And on the new Nickelodeon Cartoon program called Rocket Power. There's some nice steeling in the back ground as well?

Popular rumor has it that Barney Isaacs did the steel work in Donovan's Reef.

Barney Isaacs is listed as the steel player for Donovan's Reef in The Hawaiian Steel Guitar and Its Great Hawaiian Musicians edited by Lorene Ruymar and published by Centerstream Press.
I believe he used C6/Am7 tuning for most of his work.

As far as "Rocket Power" goes ... since my daughter Ellie "rules" the TV ... I've seen every episode.... actually very little steel in it ... just during Tito's flashbacks ....
Sure you're not talkin' about Nick's SpongeBob Squarepants .... now that is a CARTOON !!!
It features forum member Gary Brandin (Vanduras, Blue Hawaiians) along with a host of old Hawaiian steel recordings .... some sound alot like Sol Hoopii and Rudi Wairata.
In Donovan's Reef, B. Issacs plays Waipio ... over and over... in just about every scene. I love that film. |

I can't find out who's performing the steel guitar on Rocket Power, but this web site says the music is by Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo and David Eccles. Mothersbaugh also does the music for the Rugrats cartoon series.
Devo has put out a surf CD under the name The Wipeouters. I haven't heard it so I can't comment any further.

Rick,
Are you sure that the Sponge Bob show uses old recordings of Sol Hoopii etc.? I always thought it was Gary Brandin doing all of the steel work.
I've heard some great Hawaiian marches as well as an incredible version of 12th Street Rag on that show and to my ear they sound like new recordings.
Gary, care to comment on this one?

Yeah, Nick has "archieved" music that they play along with Gary's stuff. I have fun listenin' close to the backround tunes ... I have heard different tunes "spliced" together ... seemlessly... Whoever does the editing is sure GOOD.
Jeremy Wakefield also is in the credits ...
I like the one Junior Brown plays on (Texas)... and the very first Spongebob had "Tiny Tim" singin' ... this episode was followed by a "short" which featured an ALL GARY BRANDIN episode ... "Reef Blower" where there was no dialog ...
Think I watch too much SpongeBob ... I could blame it on my daughter ...
