The new CD from the late Mike Auldridge, Jerry Douglas and Rob Ickes is a great choice. It's called Three Bells.
Jerry Douglas's work with Alison Krauss and Union Station is highly recommended, as is Rob Ickes with Blue Highway and his own solo work. Check out his "Road Song" for a jazz approach to resonator guitar.

Forced to pick only one dobro instrumental for my "desert island" disc, it would likely be "Pushed Too Far" by Jerry Douglas. Apparently a lot of Douglas fans agree because after he originally recorded it in the late '80s on his now out-of-print Plant Early record, he recorded a new version six years ago on Glide.
The video below is from a number of years ago at the Telluride Festival in Colorado, and as with his bandmates in Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas, the players in his solo bands are always top notch. I've seen all the guys in the group in the video in different configurations more times than I can count - musicianship of the highest order - and a couple of them (Jerry and Bryan) will be in San Francisco this weekend at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass::

| Thanks for all the suggestions. Alison Krauss & Union Station is a real find. I like the dobro and bluegrass songs, but am interested in how the dobro fits in, the way a lap steel would. |

The way a dobro fits in like lap steel? Try looking up Shot Jackson. He did some nice stuff on a seven string Shobro that might help you out. Hal Rug on some of Loretta lynn's songs, and Kitty Well's as well. Loyd green on some of Don William's songs, and Norm Hamlett on Merl Haggard's songs might give you something like what you are looking for. I'm sorry I can't think of any songs in particular at the moment, but all of those steel players do a great job on dobro too. Good luck.
Just thought of this one: Don Williams version of "Amanda" might give you a start. |

| One thing I’d like to mention, I’m not a big fan of playing in a band with drums. I play PSG and Resophonic. Dobro has some great overtones that get masked IMO in a big band situation. Duo’s and trios work, beyond that I don’t enjoy it. That’s ok cause I got my electric table.. |

I will be seeing them this Friday evening here in Santa Rosa! I’ve had the tickets sitting in a drawer for about a year and a half. The concert was originally scheduled for August 2020 but Covid put the brakes on it.
