Koos and i found back a cassette with our HERO hawaiian steeler by the name GEORGE de FRETES(1921-1981) with a very special way of playing .((from Indonesia(ambon)//The Netherlands))

That is a beautiful song well played, I am Bill's son and I would love to know how you recorded the song to MP 3 the quality is unbelievable and I have been trying to find a way to record dads cassettes and records.

Very nice. He sounds very much like Rudi Wairata, another Indonesian Hawaiian steeler. Almost like a clone.

I wonder which one developed the style and technique. It's so close it seems that one of them had to be emulating the other.

Ed Mayer, another Indonesian/Dutch/Hawaiian player was Rudy's bass player on "Lovely Hula Girl". He lived in WPB for awhile and we became friends. He played all those "trick" tunes just like Rudy and George using D13 tuning. I believe they were all buddys and grew up together...definitely deciples of Sol Hoopii.

I haven't heard from him since the early 90's but I just saw in the HSGA newsletter that he is back in South Florida.
