| i have a shobud sd12,im adding 2 pedals and i need to buy a longer rod that goes thro pedals,what are they made of?.pedals are alluminium,so should i buy steel or stainless rod?any thoughts appreciated? |

| Most all of the manufacturers use stainless steel for the pedal rods, if that is what you are asking. Aluminum is too soft and has a tendency to break if used for pedal rods. Hope this helps |

Graham; I always just used round cold~rolled steel through the pedals. And a good quality lubrication! You can just lengthen the existing rod by drilling and tapping the extension and using the same size bolt (Headless) and screw the two pieces together! (If you center the hole on a lathe and polish the point where they join together!)

You can buy extensions from Bobbe Seymour if
you know what size they are. There is not
many sizes. |

From reading this it seems that there are one or two crossed wires here.
From what I understand (please correct me if I'm wrong) Graham is talking about the steel rod on which the individual pedals pivot. Not the pedal rods to connect pedals to cranks.[This message was edited by Gareth Carthew on 15 August 2006 at 05:39 AM.] |

| For the rod that the pedals pivot on, how about substituting some thick walled steel tubing? It might be a nice way to save a little weight. Otherwise, I would be tempted to use aluminum, if you can source that diameter. If wear were an issue, it would be an issue with the pedals, as well.... |

| I think in most cases the rod is 1/2" diameter. You should be able to buy that size rod most any place. The reason a hollow tube is not used is because usually the end of the rod is drilled and tapped for a screw that is attached to a bracket on the pedal bar. |
