I have a band that plays rockabilly, country and Western swing with just guitar (me), bass and drums, backing up 3 female singers. Fun stuff.
But, I’d like to start adding in some steel playing here and there, probably on my Fender Dual 8 Pro, at standing height. But it’s a little daunting without another guitar or chordal instrument.
Has anyone else done that? Did it work out ok? Any hints or tips in making it work?
Should be interesting!

Hi Jim,
I did the same with my occasional Western Swing trio: Six Gun Party. We have played a couple of shows in the past with lap steel, bass, and kit. It worked out just fine, as long a I played in tune (lol - make sure you can her the bass) and dropped in the occasional chord for reference. Definitely go for it

I had a 3 piece band that did Country and Blues + a little bit of jazz with just six or eight string dobro in G or G6 and a Weisenborn in D. My drummer played a very basic kit. We had a great bass player however. It was the late Tony Markellis, Trey Anastasio's bass player who played with David Bromberg in the 70s among many other people. A good bass player is key to that kind of set up.. _________________ KEVIN MAUL: Airline, Beard, Clinesmith, Donner, Evans, Excel, Fender, Fluger, Gibson, Hilton, Ibanez, Justice, K+K, Live Strings, MOYO, National, Oahu, Peterson, Quilter, Rickenbacher, Sho~Bud, Supro, TC, Ultimate, VHT, Williams, X-otic, Yamaha, ZKing. |

One suggestion to make life easier is to use the same amp as your guitar, by using an A/B switch...unless you want to carry 2 amps! |

check out the lovesick duo ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMJqAuvLWzo ) bro.
your band is practically the pittsburgh symphony compared to what they have to work with, and they're fabulous. _________________ The mainland is intimidating, bewildering, and uncomfortable. And you have to wear shoes. -- Theroux. |

Thanks!
Meant to mention that I knew of the Lovesick Duo. They are very cool.
David......both amps I would (either a BF Deluxe Reverb or a Quilter combo) have two channels that sound good, so I'm set there. |

Check out JB's flatpick and 2 fingerpick technique at 1:58. Smooth as anything or what! There was a recent thread somewhere in SGF about how difficult it is to play 6 string with thumb and fingerpicks for whatever reason
