Ok, the nice aluminum tuner head did not work (too long, will be up for sale)
I am stuck with the tray on my Franken-Bud-O-matic, (which really is a great stable guitar)
But I hate the machine heads, want a higher ratio.
Obviously I don't mind minor mods to the tray. Are there any conventional tuners that will slip in here without upsetting the apple cart too badly?
Has anyone done this upgrade, or at least replace the aging stiff ones on it now?

| What's in that thing, old Kluson Deluxes? If so, and it were mine, I'd replace 'em with brand-new comparable Gotohs. A major upgrade. |

That's just it. Don't want to take it apart to have to restring until I have the tuners in hand. These are something like classical guitar tuners in that the post goes through the slot and into the other side. |

That's correct, 5 on a plate, 1" on center. Kluson hasn't made them for several decades. Regular plated six string guitar tuners are ~1-3/8" on center so they won't work. The longer straight post that goes all the way through the two holes in the pan is necessary too because they are not screwed down to anything underneath, they just kind of float under the pan. These are the same as was used in the pre-'67 Fender 800/2000.
Kluson does make 4-on-a-plate replacements for Stringmaster guitars, they are 1" on center too. b0b sells them here in the forum store. You'd have to buy two sets and cut one extra off for each each side. They're still just 15:1
You could probably also use some reissue Grover Sta-Tites, they're 18:1, but you'd have to cut the individual base plates down to fit the tight spacing and probably enlarge the slots for the stems. If it were me I would just pull them out the next time you change strings, soak them in some solvent for while, blow them out and re-lubricate. Done.

I believe these may work? When I bought a 4 on a plate replacement for my 400 to replace the old crusty ones, the ratio was higher than the old style. |

Good find Anthony, those don't show up on the Kluson website. I did a search with the model number and found another source on ebay for $60.55 w/ free shipping. I assume these are 15:1 like the 4 on a plate reissues, I couldn't find any specs that included that info. I think the originals were 14:1 so it's a small improvement. I might grab a set for my old Fender 800
