Hi there, I'm looking for some help uncovering info on the provenance of this MSA CD-12. Serial number: 2C2890.
It's a double 12 that's currently set up as a double 10.
I bought it from a German fellow on craigslist in Moscow, ID. He had it mostly sitting in his closet for the past 30 years. He even moved to Germany, brought it over seas with him, then moved back. A couple years ago, he said that somebody (maybe the step-father of one of his friends) serviced it in Portland, OR. I notice that a couple pull rods look new.
This gentleman who I bought the steel from said he bought it from a rodeo cowboy in 1990 at a garage sale in Lincoln, Nebraska. Said that fellow was selling it because he was developing parkinson's diseases and couldn't play anymore. That, and a lifetime of rodeo injuries were starting to catch up with him.
At the time I was looking to buy, I shared a photo with the Spokane pedal steel great Duane Becker. He shared this photo from a 1973 MSA catalogue with me.
I am sharing all this in hopes that the good folks at MSA could share some info on the birth date of this fine instrument, and maybe even where it was shipped to at that time. This is a bit of a long shot, but if there is anybody else who has any info on who serviced this thing on Portland, or who that rodeo cowboy was, I'd love to learn more of this instrument's history.
Thanks all.
-Ben

Hey Ben, I waited a few days after I seen your post here regarding the MSA.
But to those with knowledge on MSA, I have a question: "Wasn't there a database of manufacturing records that MSA used to have? I seem to recall years ago, on this forum of either Reese or someone else giving dates on manufacture and first owner-I may be wrong however-I just can't remember the details. Ben, maybe try and do a search on this forum of this??? Might help. |

Ben, Reece had all that info, and was just great about sharing it here, so I'm certain someone has access and will chime in. Your MSA looks mid-late'70s to me. |

Tom Bradshaw might be a good resource. In fact, I recall seeing a similar guitar or perhaps that very one in his merch booth many years back at the St Louis convention. |

Thanks, Jim! I’ll ask him. Do you recall about how long ago he was selling a guitar like this? |

Hi Ben. Get on New MSA's web site. Contact David Wright and/or Kyle Bennett, Who work at MSA. They have all Mr. Anderson's records now and may be able to help with some information. Date of birth and where or who the guitar was shipped to.
Good Luck finding the pedigree on this old War Horse. |

I'd guess it was made around June or July of '74. |

Contact Kyle. I visited there a couple of years ago and for some strange reason I have never forgotten the serial number of my 70's D-10, 2C897. He looked the number up in an old ledger. A lot of them were shipped to MSA's distributor in Chicago, as was mine. I don't remember the distributor name. It was something like CMI, I believe. _________________ Bill Cunningham

Thank you, Kyle! And thank you all for commenting.
Depending on how far spread out MSA distributors were in 1974, this guitar may have had some other owners before being purchased by that rodeo cowboy in Nebraska.
With appreciation,
Ben |
