Topic: “expo†badge on a GFI - Removal? |

Have any of you GFI owners ever removed the “ultra†or “expoâ€badges from the front of your guitar? I’m interested in removing the “expo†badge from mine, but I don’t want to mess up the mica strip underneath it. If you removed yours, how did you get it off? Easy? Did it make a mess? Thanks in advance.

This is me also-I am a person who likes clean stuff and no logos!
I have a GFI, and have wanted to remove it. I've pulled at it some, but been afraid.
I have a Nashville 112 and have taken off that stuff. When I order a new guitar, I wonder if they'll build it for me w/o the name (no offense to them).
I remember my dad ordering a new Mercury but he required the dealer not to put their dealer junk on there. |

Jon - I'm right there with you. Late last year I saw a nice used GFI Ultra for sale here on the forum. I asked the seller (I cannot remember his name) about removing the Ultra badge. He either worked at, or used to work at, GFI. He told me how the badge was attached, and how to take it off. I can't recall the instructions, and I no longer have the PM.

| Ken, I think that I would call Bob at GFI and ask him how the “ EXPO†is applied/attached. If it’s with double backed tape, warm it a little with a hair dryer or let the sun shine on it for a few minutes and carefully pull it off. However, if it’s glued on, I would just leave it alone. I’ve noticed on the GFI website that the “ULTA†logo has a new font. I need to be playing a guitar like yours as I can only carry my LDG or Derby with great difficulty. |

Thanks Jerry. My Expo was 48 lbs when it was boxed up and shipped to me. 25 lbs out of the case.

The weight of my GFI Ultra D-10 body is the same weight as a Franklin D-10 body in the case. Both are 44 lbs
I had two piece case set for the Franklin and had a two piece case set made for the GFI. Both cases used same 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood and empty cases were same weight. I don't remember the weight of the legs/pedal bar in the case but the GFI, with aluminum legs was lighter. |

| Ken and Jack, thanks for the information regarding those weights. I think I could handle an S10 in a single case but am going to have to order split cases if I keep both, the big bodied LDG & Derby. My LDG case has the extended portion (that always remains empty) for the volume pedal and is heavy. The Derby case is a “Thomasâ€. I’m surprised how much change, physically I’ve experienced in a relatively short time. I’ve always admired Gene’s design but have never owned a GFI however, I would like to. I’ve played 3 GFI Ultra’s, all sounded very good. Jack, I’m partial to the L710 pickup and read your forum posts with much interest as you installed them. Ken, let me know what you find out about the “EXPO†badge as I’m curious too, how they are attached. Something that I really like are the end plates on the GFI Ultra’s that are brushed with a clear epoxy finish and the Mullen Discovery with the black painted end plates. I think both designs look really good and I’m sooo tired of polishing😀. |

Jerry - I'll let you know what I found out.
Something you may consider, is putting wheels and a handle on your case. I put them on the case of the BMI SD-10 I just sold. It was 65 lbs in the case. I've had multiple rotator cuff repairs, and eventually shoulder replacements in both arms. I don't want to be ripping things apart, or fatiguing my shoulders.
My GFI case has wheels on it too. The previous owner put wheels on it. You can get wheels and handles at the Home Depot. Just be sure the screws don't penetrate the case in a place where they might scar your guitar.
I may tackle the expo badge issue this afternoon.

| Try heating the badge with a hair dryer starting on one end. Once the corner of the badge becomes loose, try slipping a thin guitar string (.010 or .011)under the corner and work toward you heating the badge as you SLOWLY and gently pull the string. Any glue residue can then be removed with 'Goo Gone'. |

Done. It turns out the model name on my GFI was a vinyl sticker, kind of like the material used on bumper stickers these days. I peeled it right off without any trouble. It left a little residue, which I removed with a squirt of WD-40 on a paper napkin. All gone. Like it never even happened.

All gone....
I think the GFI looks a lot better without the "expo" sticker on it. Cleaner, and less busier look. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
