I want to experiment with various configurations of lap steel construction and set up. On the cheap. With materials on hand.

I just want to goof around with different configurations, record the waveform. I have Audacity software.

The Q: are the cheap audio interfaces workable for this?

e.g.: BEHRINGER Audio Interface, 1x XLR/TRS 1x 1/4" 2X RCA USB, Black, 1-Channel (UM2). $45.00

versus:

MOTU UltraLite-mk5 18x22 USB Audio Interface. $599

Thanks a heap

Not sure about the Behringer, but a Focusrite Scarlett Solo is only $120 and they are tried and true. I have to think it’s worth it to spend a little extra for what I would arguably say is the industry standard. I have not found a good argument for stepping up to a $500 interface.

The MOTU 4pre I have for sale on the forum and the free Cakewalk by Bandlab and you will have a very good home recording studio. I'm still downsizing or wouldn't be selling it. I'm selling the 4pre with 4 analog preamps (the Mk5 only has two) for half the price.

I'm not a Focusrite fan. I've had a couple, including a second gen Scarlett, and sold them. Latency is much higher than MOTU and sound fidelit8y is not as good as MOTU.

If you are just testing waveforms, you probably don’t need multiple inputs, so a Focusrite solo should do. I have had no latency issues with mine.

On the other hand, that is a great deal for that MOTU Jack has for sale.
