The "unknown group" is the Dick Miller band.
Active around LA for 10 years or more, he made a bunch of good records....some with Ralph Mooney.
I don't know who the steeler is.
Here's a few more pix of him. One with that same steel player, from 1959 at the Club Manger in El Monte.
The last pic might also be with the same steeler. Looks like the same mouth, but tough to tell without the glasses.
First one on fiddle with Hank and Eddie Cochran.

El Monte is where my grandparents lived...but they were very very devout Nazarenes and would -not- have been familiar with that establishment!! 
Incidentally they went to church with Iris Colleen Summers (who later went by Mary Ford and of course, married Les Paul). And my uncles told me that Sol Ho'opi'i played at their church once or twice and they saw him (my dad probably not born yet). OK, one more fun anecdote...a couple years back my parents gave me a stack of old (like 30s/40s) vinyl my grandma had kept. Among them was an almost inaudible paper-based record of my grandpa and his brother recording a message to send back home to their families from the front in WWII. I was amazed to hear their voices again! And the other was a 1939 recording of Hawaiian steel guitar that they had done at their little hobby studio. https://clyp.it/bwl1choh# So, it was fate, I guess...
That first pic in 1954...how strange would a Stratocaster look to people back then! Completely exotic...

Even hobby players sounded so good back in the day! Nice post, Nic.
And here's one I cribbed this from an eBay auction. This pic has it all ... Rickenbacher Bakelite, vintage cigarette machine, Jascha Heifetz, and a dog to touch your heart! A quick check of the date for the film "They Shall Have Music" gives us 1939.

Well, I should say, I meant more that they were hobby recording engineers (both brothers went on to be officers in the US Army Signal Corps)...the player turned out to be Wes Dunn...married to Belva Dickerson (daughter of Delbert Dickerson, manufacturer of steel guitars), both taught by Sol Ho'opi'i himself I believe. They were early teachers of Margie Mays as I recall.

Between the body curves and the attached cord, I think it's a cheaper Valco like a Supro Baton or a National Waikiki. Hard to tell from the angle, though. |

Steelers: Al Casey (the well known Arizona standard guitar player), Billy Hew Len, Noel Boggs, Curley Cochran, Don Davis, Jerry Byrd, Jody McCauley, and John Hughey.
Others of note: Jody Reynolds, Bobby Gene Yount, Thumbs Carllile, Ernie Lee, Casey Clark, Harold Bradley, Sue Thompson, Conway Twitty.
Wesley Pickett must have gone into the Army with Conway....5 years after this pic was taken, he and Gene Jones were both members of Conway's overseas band.
I think the bar shown is Murphy's in Los Angeles---on Pico Boulevard as I recall.
The Sue Thompson pic is from very early in her career...before she ever had a hit. Likely taken in Oakland during the time she was working with Dude Martin.

Before the string empire ....
Ernie was the son of Roland Ball at whose Los Angeles Hawaiian teaching studio the faculty included Sol Ho'opi'i and Dick McIntire. One of the students was a lad named Earl Murphey, later to acquire the nickname "Joaquin."
