| I have an 8 string Ricky B Panda, circa 1950, and the low 8th string is much quieter in the mix than the other 7. Obviously some kind of issue with the pickup. Any ideas? Maybe a bad pole? |

| Odd as it may sound, that's actually common for the 8-string versions. I've had several with poor string balance on the outer strings, and other people have said the same. As far as I am aware, there is no fix. |

| Seems I read somewhere that many of the eight string pickups were modified six string pickups and prone to the issue you described. Hopefully real Rickenbacker historians will chime in. |

Jason Lollar built a custom 8 string horseshoe with adjustable pole pieces for my Pettingill P8 Deluxe. It was a little spendy, but it’s perfectly balanced.

On the eight and ten string horseshoe pickups, the outside strings are closer to the "U" in the magnets, and the magnets are much weaker there than they are towards the ends of the magnets (middle of the pickup). I've had more problems with the first string being weak than the 8th or 10th--I guess due to its smaller size.

| I have an 8 string Rickenbacker Jerry Byrd model which had the same problem. Turns out the steel (mandolin fret) that’s mounted on the bridge, that the strings sit on, had worn. I had the that piece replaced and it now sounds great. |
