| Hey Bill, that's awesome. Could you share how many strings, and how they are tuned? I play 8 string Leavitt with the upper 6 in the usual tuning, but with string 8 at F# and string 7 at A. This setup gets a fat minor 7th chord (something sorely lacking in Leavitt tuning). Unfortunately, the min 7th is a bit blubbery, being on the lowest strings only... |

hey walter. this was done 14 years ago on a 10 string. tuning was low to high....
Eb G# C# E G Bb C D Eb G
i have since gone out to 14 strings on the leavitt, with only two strings lower than the standard leavitt tuning and all the rest higher. i also change the tuning on the two lower strings to compliment whatever key i am playing a song in.
i have also in some cases tuned the entire tuning down as much as two steps. i think it fattens the timbre up a bit. when i went out to 14 strings, the upper strings can sound a bit harpy, zithery if your not careful. always experimenting. |

thanks fred. back in the day, there was posting of fine adventurous playing by folks in the no pedals section. i am thankful that folks ask me to put some of these back on. maybe some here have not heard them so i will put on one a week till they run out. some guys have collected them into files. please do that, as there have been occasions when the publishers of the songs pull them off of some of the servers and they havent been heard for over 10 years. this thurs i will post one of those that was taken off shortly after i put it up. i had to go back to the original master ADAT tape and make a new mix and put it on soundcloud.
things i record are personal musical challenges to me that i enjoy doing. i have always tried to record things that show what our non pedal instruments are capable of doing. its fine with me that mostly just people here on the forum hear them. i never was interested in trying to get huge numbers in other places. im fine with steel guitar enthusiasts enjoying them. hopefully someone will get something out of them. our instrument needs to continue moving forward musically and acceptability wise. |

Thank you, Bill. I will be doing some harvesting of your tunes for sure.
I play pedal steel, and your steel w/o pedals arrangements, besides being a joy to listen to, also present a significant challenge to the average changer mechanism. I spent a half hour last night trying to cover your intro to I Can’t Help It on my E9 12-string. No dice.
One of the things I used to believe about steel guitar was that anything that is possible on non-pedal can be done better with pedals and levers. After listening to you, along with Billy Robinson and Maurice Anderson, I no longer believe that. |
