Anyone know what these set screws on the back side at the ends of carter cross-shafts are for? I have a hunch, but my hunches are usually dangerous.

There must be pins located inside the cross shafts.
The set screws hold them in place. Very Happy

Hmmmm. What do the pins do? I'm guessing it has something to do with adjusting the slack from apron to apron. Can't find anything about it in the Carter manual, though.

I'm sure they hold the cross shafts in place.

Some Carter models cross shafts are hollow. The round inserts are what rotate inside the bushing. So, yeah the length is set and the screw locks the insert as obviously you can't adjust the length when they are installed.

The Carter I'm playing uses very thin shims to adjust the slack. Add or remove as necessary.
The back panel comes off to add or remove shafts

Thanks Erv and Jerry. This is kind of what I was imagining. I have no plans to mess with the cross shafts for now, but good to know for future reference.
