Lo-to-Hi...G-B-D-F#-A-D

I know we have some Forumites who play extensively or dabble frequently with this tuning.

It appears to be very versatile. Lots of chords available straight on without using a bar.
G Maj; D Maj; B Min; D6; Bm7

Also, an easy retune from Dobro G.

I was hoping some of you may post links to examples of your playing; links to prior threads; your experiences with this tuning so we can have a base of knowledge.

Thanks.

Gmaj9, G B D F# A D is forum administrator b0b Lee’s favourite 6 string tuning. https://b0b.com/wp/about-b0b/bobby-lees-non-pedal-tunings/

If he doesn’t chime in soon, you might want to try a DM.

As you experiment with the G / d (Gmaj9) tuning, there are a couple other interesting variations that you might want to try.

G9 - G B D F A D gives you G +7 +9 and D minor
G11 - G B D F A C gives you G +7 +9 +11 and D minor and F major and F6
GM9(add#11)? - G B D F# A C# This is one that Andy Volk used, and posted a recording a couple weeks ago. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=367084

I’m partial to G9 since I play mostly blues. I find that tuning choices are always compromises and balancing acts, and what works for one person may not work for another. 7s and 9s work well in blues, 6s and major 7s, not so much. For jazz players, those 6s and maj7s are pretty important—my G9 won’t work well for them.
