300-400ms delay, with 15-25% feedback, and a mix of 10-30% covered my needs for a long time. It's more of a space filler to me. To me, a slap-back is more like 80-120ms.
It's more popular today to be tempo-based (tap tempo or setting the bpm in the unit), and I'll work off of dotted 1/8th notes and 1/4 note delays. These sounds are more atmospheric. The delays can be heavily eq'd or effected in other ways too. Check out things Russ Pahl does...
I'm all in the HX Stomp for live, but often do delays and reverbs in post production (after recording) if I am overdubbing from home, using Echoboy. It allows me to experiment.

I used to run a stereo rig all of the time, and sent a dry signal to one amp, and the mixed signal to the other.
When I run direct, it is usually stereo, but I will use ping-pong style delays in most cases there. I guess I have learned that I had to be more mono-compatible, because you never know how the sound man is going to deal with panning.
Most all the live stuff I do now is in mono. Been trying the "simpler is better" approach for a bit.

Dinosaur here. Still using stereo rigs with multi-fx units. For the pedal steel, I use a half dozen or so patches with varying amounts and levels of delay for different situations. I'm almost never mic'ed, so I just set them to suit me.
I tend to use a little shorter delay time than David, say around 250ms for ballads. About 1-2 repeats about half as loud as the original note.
I do have a mono system when I have to grab and go or save stage space, with which I use a couple of stomp style delay boxes. Generally about the same settings as above.
The idea is to give the sound just a little boost for bloom and shimmer to fatten it.
For edgy, grit and rock stuff, I just turn the effect off.
Most of my units have the tap function but I hardly use it.
There are many ways to use delays for either subtle or wild effects depending on the music and way you play and/or your needs. Too much to get into here. |

Typically, I just use a bit of reverb.
As I mentioned in another discussion, I usually add just a touch of delay (one subtle repeat) with reverb when we play outdoors. I think it can make it sound more like a large room, with just a hair of reflection coming off a wall.....that isn't there.
