I keep going back to those classic Tony Booth tunes with Jaydee Maness on gnarly pedal steel. What tone and style!

Yeah, it's awesome, isn't it? It was cut in '72, and IMHO, it's pretty much a perfect steel part all the way through the tune...which is an extremely deep shuffle.
Thanks for posting that link. |

i've listened to a lot of jaydee's playing before and thought it was great, but i'm really digging his tone on the tony booth stuff, and 'what a liar i am' is a great example. |

I uploaded these video clips for my friend (and also a hero of mine), Jay Dee Maness, who is playing steel guitar in the clips. These were likely taken from an old VHS tape. I left the commercials in for nostalgia sake. I'm guessing they were before the Desert Rose Band. JayDee can jump in here and tell you for sure...
Hope you like them!

Yes, thank you, Ernie. And the announcer gave each musician credit!
What year what this be, more or less? 1970s? |

Thanks Ernie. What a lineup. Not mentioned here, but Jack Daniels band leader on guitar, later with Highway 101 too.
It's great to hear these great musicians and singers doing covers of other greats' stuff.
Jay Dee is just fabulous. I could listen to him coming up with things all day long. |

How many times have we thought, wish there was a video of that band...OMG there actually was! Love these time capsules of great club bands. And JayDee, it doesn't get any better. His approach is like nobody else's, so advanced and innovative, yet still so country.
Thanks Ernie for digitizing and posting. |

Thanks for the vids, Ernie! What a band. Is the bass player the same Don Whaley who played on various records including Ian Matthews. I think Skip would know. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

Solid Gold. Thanks Ernie. Jack Daniels is now Connie Smith's guitarist. Ernie, thanks for leaving commercials in - very important for background and estimating dates. Jay Dee rules! |

Paul Bowman refers to an event on Friday, Jan. 30th so this must be 1981.
Besides the great solos, it's also worth noting how Jay Dee fills between vocals, not on top of them, as well as how he pads or lays out the rest of the time. You don't hear this so much on recordings, but it's very instructive for playing live with a small group. |

I'm glad you like these clips! I think I got them from Clem Schmitz a while back. I had sent Jay Dee a couple questions about them and he said he'd like it if they could be put on line so everybody could see them and there they are. Jay Dee is such a great player and has a style all his own. _________________ My best,
