For no particular reason, I thought it would be fun to have one of these around. The new Eastwood Mandosteel. Restrung and retuned immediately to an open G, gG BB GG DD

I had to file the nut slots a bit, and one of the saddle notches too, in order to use the heavier low strings. Part of the reason I used a light, reentrant string for string 8.

It takes some getting used to with the odd string spacing, but it has potential as a nifty blues and rock strummer.

Played it a bit this afternoon. As expected, it is pretty good for big, fat, open chords for blues rhythm playing. It’s also tons of fun for playing droney, spacey stuff, with a big delay. Having 4 of 8 strings tuned to the same note is great for that.

Yeah, one of my first experiences playing "slide" guitar (bottleneck) was on my Danelectro 12-string electric...the two course thing works really well IMO for that...you get more string resistance so you aren't bottoming out on the fretboard, and the sound has that thicker, fuller sound that takes overdrive really well. Sounds like fun!

Allan - I showed your post to my wife, who thought it looked cool, so we looked at the Eastwood site. - it looks and sounds so good, she said, “Happy birthday.” Got one on the way thanks to you!

Hey! Thanks for checking out the Mando Steel! I actually came up with the idea and pitched it to Eastwood. They were kind enough to try it out and it is a great instrument to get creative on.

That’s pretty neat! Can we assume that you also own one?

I’m hoping that they start offering the instrument that I’ve pitched them. It seems like a “no-brainer” for them.... A 5 string electric tenor guitar set up for Keith Richards Open G. For the life of me, I can’t understand why they chose a long scale for the 5 string tenor they now sell!

Yeah I have a one from Eastwood and a few prototypes. Here is a video of John Neff and me doing a demo.

I hope that they can get your idea into production! I'm a sucker for anything Rolling Stones related!
