Besides being a great player, Gary is just an all around good guy. I worked in a music store in Fort Worth back in the 70's and 80's, and that's where I got started with pedal steel when we took a little MSA Sidekick in trade.
I had no idea what I was doing (not much has changed in that regard) but I figured out how to tune it and learned how to mash the A pedal for that B-bender sort of thing like you hear Tele guys do.
I already knew Gary from a few visits he'd made to the store from time to time, and he happened to wander in one day while I was messing around on that Sidekick. He said something like 'show me what ya got', so I proceeded to display my one-pedal lick(s).. He sort of chuckled and said "Hey man, that's cool. Try mashing both of those left pedals at the same time." I was completely blown away, the thought had never occurred to me. One foot, one pedal right? 
I asked if it would bend or break something using two pedals at the same time? LOL.. I was clueless.
Gary was so cool about the whole thing, showed me a couple of other things, and was generally very encouraging. I also shared a stage with Gary on guitar a few times, and the big hazard was that I'd get so focused on watching Gary that I'd blow guitar parts.
Last I heard he was still playing some around the Dallas/FW area and was also doing real estate I think.

| Gary is still selling real estate. He is still playing around the DFW area and still the nicest person you will ever meet. He owns a place on Lake Texoma, so he spends some of his time there. He sold the Rains Guitar Company to Curtis Houge. So the Rains guitar is now being made in Valley View, Texas. I saw him at a Cowboy Church a few months ago. Still playing a Rains and still using a Nashville 400. |
