Hi gang. I just stumbled onto a good deal on a D-11. The back neck C6 has D E C A G E C A F C A.

I’m thinking about ditching the low A. What would you do? I was thinking D G E C...etc but remembered Bobby Black had a D and B on top of his 12 string non pedal ...the same intervals as the E9 chromatic strings, but in a different key of course. I’m not a super experienced C6 player, but I know a few things. Thanks

Dz

For me Bobby Black can do no wrong. If I could face moving all the rods I would indeed go

D B E C A G E C A F C

Depending on how hard it is to change the rodding on a ZB I myself would (initially at least) give the low A string a chance. Curly Chalker sounded great with it! I prefer D to the high G on top though it would be nice to have both so I can understand moving everything too. Never considered a B string though. Happy enough to just have it on the knee lever.
Have fun with the new axe!

At one point I thought about keeping the low A but the string is so big in diameter that is the bar doesn’t fret very good near the nut, but yes Curly was great with it. I do have C to B on a knee lever... while I could live without the high G, I would definitely use it more than the low A, but yeah, changing rods on a zb isn’t super difficult but rebalancing is a pain

I would like both the High G and D strings. The 11 string gives you that option. I'd love to have an 11 string as I use the High G for 1st string but occasionally tune it down to D. Having both would be a plus. D for 1st string and G for 2nd string. Sort of like the E9th chromatic tuning with lower strings on top.

I’d go with the high G. I know Buddy did ok without it Laughing therefore we all should. But there is something about the timbre of the chords with that string that can’t be duplicated.

Listen to Maurice and you will hear that 6 chord with the 5 on top a lot. Reece said here on the SGF once that he couldn’t imagine dropping that string. Also Rick Schmidt has it on his D-12 and makes really nice use of it.

Actually, Bobby Black just has 11 strings on his 12-string West Coast steel. I think having B as the second string is a great idea.
