Does anyone have experience or feedback on these? How do they compare with vintage Weissenborns, and new Bear Creeks, etc? How versitile are they, compared to say a reso type? I can't locate Yanuziello's website. What do these sell for new? I'm looking at the one Elderly currently has for sale.

Dana: The Hawaiian King has been discussed a number of times before, most recently on the thread, "What is a Kona guitar?," which is still on the No Peddlers display page. As I said in that thread, the Hawaiian King is not, as the Elderly description suggests, a mere Weissenborn copy. To my ears, it puts any Weissenborn to shame. Joe had problems with his web server and his site has consequently been down for some time. You can reach him at 416-535-6018 (by all means, use my name). I'll also get his current email address and post that.
In addition to the Hawaiian King, Joe also makes resophonics, electric guitars and elctric mandolins. All are superb. To date, he's built instruments only part time, but I think he hopes to move into instrument building full time shortly.

Wow! What a beautiful instrument, and a great price too. I hope you are the person who has it on hold, Dana.
Ian is being reserved in his post. He raves about the Hawaiian King as well as Mr. Y's resos.
I had a beautiful 1920's style 1 Weissenborn and really didn't like it. Wimpy tone, IMHO.

Thanks for the input guys. Yes, it's me that has the Elderly guitar on hold. It's a beautiful instrument fer sher. Unfortunately something came up financially the same day I put the hold on, and I've been trying to make it work. Unfortunately it's not in the cards for me right now to get the Yanuziello. So...I will be taking it off hold tomorrow and wanted to give my fellow Forumites the heads up in case anyone wants to jump on it.

I've never seen or played a Hawaiian King but I'll take Ian's word for it that it's a fabulous instrument. Elderly is asking a fair price too.
I do own a Bear Creek and I'd say it's equally fantastic for workmanship and tone. I've played 2 original 20's Weissenborns and 1 Hilo. Each had an airy, resonance ... in my experience, a unique sound that - contrary to what people may say - is unduplicated in a modern instrument - Bear Creek included.
The BC's sound however, is much more full, rich and overall "throatier" than the original. It's ultimately a more versitile sound IMHO but I wouldn't call the original "wimpy", just extremely subtle. The BC's construction and attention to detail are light years ahead of the originals as well. Weissenborn type steel guitars have a lot of untapped potential for many genres of music regardless of the maker. I hope more people check 'em out. |
