I just got my hands on one of Goodrich's new limited edition pedals, the Baby Bloomer. It is a preamp that goes at the end of the signal chain -- there are three settings: a more traditional/brighter sound, a fatter darker sound and a combination of the two. It is apparently modeled on the preamp section of an old Echoplex and gives a nice "tube-like" sound. I've only had it for a short while but I'm digging it.

Here's Goodrich's link: https://goodrichsoundcompany.com/product/bloomer-preamp-pedal/?fbclid=IwAR00Mdov_-rGk85VFtQKWOu50eMsvRm_RIYUXryCY65QZmuMWqjWna2BK8c

Kevin Ryan is really building on Goodrich's legacy and moving the company into the future. Very cool new pedal -- go, Kevin!

Been looking at that for a while. Are you using it for steel or guitar?

Jerry - I'm using it with steel. I haven't tried it with a guitar yet but I think it could be pretty cool.

Marty - I think a Lil Izzy is a buffer. The Bloomer is a preamp with three tone control settings and a gain control. To my ears, the Bloomer adds a certain "tube-like" roundness -- it goes at the end of the signal chain.

Boo, are you able to do a comparison of the Bloomer to a Sarno Black Box? Curious how those two stack up. I miss you, my friend, hope all is well in your world. Who you playing with these days?

Ron I will do a video shortly. Trouble is capturing the subtleties of of this, even if we do an elaborate setup not sure that you will hear the phase reversing, 3d overtones we hear. I'll try probably next week to do this. I did one with my brother for instagram, on guitar you can check out..https://youtu.be/G0RFDB7QlZ4

Interesting, a preamp at the end of an effects chain? I guess that's where an Echoplex would typically go, but it does seem odd.

The website doesn't give a ton of info, or audio examples...if anyone who has one could do a YouTube video, it would be cool to hear it!

Will,. they do not come with a power supply but any center negative, 9v 100ma will work. Does have a battery included of course. We have 3 left. And they will again be available in 4 weeks or so. Thanks, Kevin

Once or twice a year I actually pay attention. ;>))

A couple of things.
Not criticisms, but observations or questions.

1) The YT video is for the Baby Boomer, not Bloomer.

2) The Goodrich product page, concerning the gain control states (I rearranged the order of the sentences):

No signal in off position (full counter-clockwise)
9 to 11 o’clock position for a matching gain option
At 12 to 2 o’clock position you will get a 3DB+ boost which adds a slight phase shift with a fattening tone enhancement, very 3D sounding.
3 to 5 o’clock position for 1dB or 2dBs for a slightly vintage sound

So as the pot is turned up, it goes from no signal, to unity gain, to max gain, to less than max gain?

Mine arrives tomorrow and I'm gonna use it on a gig tomorrow night with a black box and the TT12. Will report back and try to do some high quality recordings at home with a good mic. I'll try to get my wife to get some vids from the gig, too, to compare full band vs at home.

Sorry -- I'm just getting back to this post.

I have had the Baby Bloomer for a few weeks now and it has really grown on me. I'm using a setting to give my signal a little boost -- really adds to the sustain. I have been going between the brighter setting and the hybrid setting. I really like the hybrid for C6th.

John M -- Always great to hear from you, my friend. It's hard to compare the BB to the BB (Baby Bloomer to Black Box). Both are high quality gear -- in fact, I own both. To my ears, the Black Box is more subtle; I often use it to make solid state amps have a bit more roundness. The Baby Bloomer is more strident -- it can boost your signal and sustain and, to me, it seems to be adding additional character to the tone (in a good way).

I will try to see if I can capture the sound on video as soon as I have some time.

Chris,
I assume you didn't think much of the BB? Looks like you have it up for sale rather quickly.
What did you not like about it?

I have had mine for awhile now and I really like what it does to my sound..It really enhances the sound but doesn't put mid range to the signal. Ra
really I don't know what it does but I like it..Especialy in a live playing situation.

Larry, I liked it quite a bit, but it would have required me to get a bigger pedal board if I kept it. Hate dealing with batteries on a gig and would much rather have a power supply hardwired. If I didn't have to get a bigger board I certainly would have kept it. I knew that going in, but curiosity and stimulus check got the better of me Laughing Like others have said, it's subtle, but it's very nice. Just thicker, fatter tone and a little more sustain. Built like a tank, too.

I have one on the way. I'm a fan of using the Earth Drive as a clean boost on Steel, little to no drive, and leaving it on. I suspect this will be similar.
Will report back.
