Hi Dennis. I've just converted the stringing of an Ext. E9 ST-12 to Universal stringing -- lose the 9th string D, go down to 12th string B -- because I can't deal with going back and forth between differently strung guitars. Years ago I had an ST-12 6 + 5 Uni (P6 was on a lever and it worked great).
So no, there are no issues that I know of.

This is the Larry Bell guitar. I know it and the setup well because that one that I had and sold a while ago I had bought from someone who had been a protege of Larry's and it had a setup very close to this one.

Looks like the biggest problem would be finding 3 more pedals, That would match the present pedals.
Changed a GFI S12 from E9th Extended to Jeff Newman 12 U was no problem with factory parts available and easy to obtain.
If you jump in Good Luck.

I wouldn't attempt it on a push-pull. Shocked

As far as I know it was done on quite a few PP’s back in the day. Also, considering that the original Crawford Cluster was a PP, it shouldn’t represent a problem. For the record, I’m currently working on a D12 PP with the Crawford Cluster that will be an SD12 with a rather busy 8 and 6 universal tuning, and the mechanics of that particular tuning at least presents no problems.

I have an Emmons S12U 7x5 that I bought new in 1982.
fwiw, You can play a ton of 6th sounding stuff on a standard E9th or Ext-E9.
My thought would be... Keep that Emmons if you play Ext-E9th, and/or if you want to play Universal buy a brand new S12U by a currently in business brand like Mullen.
If you are already used to playing E9th with the 9th string=D, you could just play it the way it is. That D note basically becomes your Pedal-6 function.
What does your 4th pedal do?
Maybe you could post what the current copedant is, and a few pics of the top and bottom if the Steel?

I had one. The downs side:
1. A lot of tuning happens underneath the guitar rather than at the end plate.
2. Raises predominate over a lower. An all pull universal combines rather which I wind up using quite a bit.

The upside: Sounded wonderful and rarely needed tuning but number 2 was a deal killer for me.
Caveat - Some people have figure out a way to make a PP combine a raise and lower.

I'm with Pete B. though, my universal brethren from way back.
