I’d like it impose on the amazing knowledge of this group. My buddy bought a steel wanting to learn how to play. He’s asked for my help identifying this steel and I’m at a stand still. The only markings are on the fretboard... labeled “Stokesâ€. Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you all so much.

Appears to be an early 'MSA' mechanically, not certain on the origin of the fret board (Pedalmaster?). |

Is there a serial number stamped in the endplate?
The brackets look a little crude to my eyes. I'd bet (but not a lot) that it's a homebuild. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Fret board is unique. Doesn't look like a PedalMaster.
The 2 threaded rod legs are also unique and indicate a homebuilt or modified PSG. _________________ Carters Starter, D10 8+7, SD10, Chandler RH-2, Rogue RLS-1

What does that say? Stokes? Doesn't mean anything to me but there's no reason it would.
There is some ingenuity in a few things that catch my eye.
It appears to be a combination of legit parts (the keyhead) and off the shelf hardware. It does look home built.
edited to add: my apologies -- I didn't see that the name was already mentioned in the original post. |

That’s the only info I’ve seen on this guitar. Thank you all for your help. It is greatly appreciated! _________________ St. Blues 1984 "Holy Grail"

We know of at least three now. Seems to me to be not a homebuilt necessarily but a guitar built by a guy with the intentions of becoming a pedal steel guitar manufacturer.
Guys, is that a pull release mechanism?
I like the name "Stokes". |

It's not a simple pull-release. It looks a bit like a Kline-type changer with raises and lowers tuning at the endplate. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Maybe Daniel Stein could inform us more about it. I see ZB pivot-style puller bars (for KL’s ?) underneath the bell crank pulls ..no, maybe all types, or refined versions going to the pedal set. Where are you Dan? 😃 |

The fancy design of the name STOKES as shown, May be the name or trademark of a sign or graphic shop that made the fret board.
It may have nothing to do with the guitar itself. |
