90s BMI S10 3x3 parts availability?

I have a opportunity at a BMI S10 3 + 3 from the 90â€™s for a good price. My question is if down the road I want to add on to it, are parts still available?

Also I was curious about opinions on this steel, Iâ€™ve read a lot of great things about these steels, from the mechanics underneath to the solidness of the build, etc.

Cody, they are still in business and will sell you what you need. I own 2 s10 and find them fairly easy to work on and solid. The tone is good and it's a good workhorse steel.

I bought the steel and I’m very impressed with how it feels and sounds, it is very sturdy. It Being a used passed along steel there’s gonna be some tinkering to get it to fit me right. My first project will be to get the pedals shifted over to the left. I wonder if the original owner had it set for CBA rather than ABC so he had the pedals moved to the right. Hmmmmm, nonetheless I’m glad I went for it!

I bought a used BMI 3/4 body SD-10 a few months ago. It had been cleaned up and refurbed to an extent. Mine is also 3 & 3.

The folks at BMI are some of the nicest and helpful people you would ever hope to deal with. They have a parts list posted on their web site, link below:

Don at BMI: estimates my guitar was made in the mid-80's. The build and s/n records prior to Zane Beck's passing were lost by his widow.

Fortunately, my guitar is in great condition. I have already bought the parts needed to add a pull to RKL, and add a RKR with 2 pulls, bringing it up to a 3 & 4. I've got another order into them at this time for some other misc. parts. I plan on replacing all of the springs, and nylon tuners, and a few other things.

These things are easy to work on and the folks at BMI will help you with any questions.

Presently, I've got my can of Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish, and I'm polishing up all the metal to mirror finish. When I'm done, this thing will be like new, mechanically and cosmetically.

I don't regret buying the BMI at all. It is built like a tank, sounds great, and has some nice sustain. It is the loudest sounding steel I've owned when NOT plugged into an amp.

smart decision Cody. I owned a BMI S10 in the 90's. Miss that thing to this day. I swapped it to pay some bills. It eventually wound up in Don Helms hands when he was messing around with pedals.BMI is so overlooked. Not sure why. I put them up against any steel out there. They are the F-150 of the workhorse guitars! Congrats on the find.

I got an old workhorse S10 3x4 BMI from Jack Goodson that I play daily. I was told the changer was new but I believe it was rebuilt. It has a great tone and after some oiling and tweaking it plays good. Holds tune fairly well too.

Joe - I agree. It appears BMI is overlooked. They make a quality instrument, and their prices are very competitive. Parts prices are very reasonable too. Anyone looking for a new pedal steel, even a beginner, should give BMI some consideration. They still make a full line of pedal steels, keyed and keyless, S-10, SD-10, and D-10, even a light weight model.

John - Thanks much. That certainly helps - My S/N is 916. So mine is a bit older than we thought. Since 1024 was in 1983, 916 is probably 1982-83. That's interesting, since Zane Beck may have been involved with building mine. Zane passed away in May 1985.

Thanks everybody , the ABC pedals were shifted too far to the right when I got it. My project this weekend was making new pull rods and moving the cranks over thanks to everyone’s advice, it turned out just right using the welding tig rods. Now the pedals feels right where they should be and everything about this steel is awesome! Very lightweight and sturdy. I can’t stop playing it, very well built steel

You can get a new decal for the front apron from BMI for a few bucks.

Looks like a new decal is about 5 dollars. Probably some shipping included. When that steel was new the decal was probably the older style compared to the one available now but personally I prefer the new decal.

Of all the BMI’s I’ve seen over the years, I haven’t noticed a difference in decals.

Correction - I just checked the new guitars - I see where the black areas are gone on the new decal. It wouldn’t surprise me if BMI doesn’t have an old one available.
