I'm learning some songs for a band, and "In the Corner, At the Table, By the Jukebox" by James Hand is one of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUP7r-jV4zU
Naturally, upon first listen, I say to myself, "Who is playing that superhuman pedal steel?"
It's Ricky Davis, of course! Man, can that cat play. Learning that solo is going to give me some fun (I might get close) _________________ Marlen S12 and a ZT Club |

Wow! Ricky Davis is somethin' else. That is perfection.
Miss that old honky tonk sound. James Hand was pure country for sure. |

On my 1st listen to James back then I thought wow, real Honky Tonk music for sure. I had hopes for our industry. Strong lyrics and serious music at it best. |

Thanks for posting that.
That was a great non-E9 non-pedal ride and is a perfect match to his singing style. |

Thanks, everyone! I'm so sorry to hear of James' passing. I was just recently introduced to him by way of this song, so I look forward to more listening.
My take won't be as masterful as Ricky or Cindy's, but I'll strive to catch hold of the hem of the giant's robe so that I may be carried aloft, even for a short time. _________________ Marlen S12 and a ZT Club |

Ok Andrew; I will introduce you to the James Hand I met in a hold he buried himself into in 1990. I was NOT going to let him NOT SING AND WRITE and here's how the story goes>:
Quote: |
RIP James.
Ok long story short. in mid 90's I was playing a gig just outside of Tokio, Tx where I knew this singer I had a cassette tape lived.
HIs name was James Hand and I wanted to meet him. We drove over to his house and I showed him the tape and asked if he would
come sing a song with us; he asked: "Ricky; what is your favorite song on that?" I said:"Why didn't you Hold me".
Well he came and sang and I kept trying to get him to come out of his hole and sing again and he did. In year 1999 he asked me and Dave Biller
to play on his album called "Evil Things" Dave produced it and played guitar and I played pedal steel and no-pedal steel and guess what the
first song was I cut on?? Yes !!! "Why Didn't You Hold Me"....and here it is with me playing steel on the first song he cut coming out of his hole.
This album never got picked up to distribute....so you can't find it...and only some have it....so here is that song by James Hand and us.
I'll miss you James; I was so Proud of you and you were only 10 years older than me; I loved you like a Brother; Now go rest high on that Mountain.
Your first Steel player,
Ricky Davis |

Thank you so much Ricky! That song just tears me apart.
When I first heard James and read a little about him, I was amazed that he had played for so long and yet never cut a record until "Evil Things". We're all lucky that you were able to encourage him. His songwriting is inspired and his voice is an absolute gem, cuts right through to you like Hank Sr.
Come to think of it, the singer might have just as tough a job as I do... _________________ Marlen S12 and a ZT Club |
