Hey,
One of my students is looking to upgrade from his recent model Recording King. Budget is around $5-800. I'd like to find something with no potential issues, so if it's vintage, it needs to be sturdy. Also, his practice space is very noisy, so probably a humbucker or other noise-cancelling pickup.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks!

I would ask the following questions to help guide your choice:
1. What style of music is he learning / interested in?
2. What scale length is preferred?
3. What about the current lap steel is a problem...eg, what does he want to "upgrade" from? (noisy electronics are easily replaced, too) _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

Hi Jim,
Here's a beautiful Rukavina custom built lap steel for sale on the forum. I think it's a new guitar.

Listed at $150.00 less than the top budget you get a steel thats custom built, including the nut and bridge, fretboard and I would think the pickup. |

The V-MUSE might be an option.

There's simply no question in my mind that I would shop for a vintage Supro/Valco. That wraparound humbucker is pure mojo.
And you could likely get one for less than $500. |

This is obviously kind of a necrothread at this point, but since I posted my initial reply I have learned about Bill Hatcher's simply beautiful guitars - that is what I would buy! |

@ Jim Fogerty, what did your student end up buying? |
He ordered one from Melbert. On it's way soon, I believe.
Thanks! |
