Your best combination is a chrome bar on nickel strings. Very Happy

I was going to say a string of cold beers from a neighborhood bar, But I will have to agree with Erv. I have a 3/4" BJS bar (chrome) and a 1" Nu-Generation. I can't remember who made it, and I think he quit making them. Not sure if it is chrome or stainless. I use nickel strings, and can't tell any difference in my bars outside of the diameter and weight. The Nu-Generation 1" bar is my main bar.

I bought a new Williams guitar and when I got it I wasn't happy with the sound.
I contated Bill Rudolph and asked him if the guitar came with stainless steel strings, he said: "yes".
I changed the string to nickel and got the sound I was looking for. Very Happy

In my 40 + yrs. of playing, I have to say I can't tell a nickel's worth of difference....pun intended.

Hi Richard,
I believe the Nu-Generation bar is the one with the brass insert in the bar-nose. It was made by Mr Porter, here in Las Cruces, NM. But I think you're right, no longer in business.....too bad, those are good bars.

Gary, I have to agree with nickel strings sound best. I tried the stainless and it was too bright. Same for my 6 string guitars. Nickel has a warmer tone.

I wouldn't think of using stainless strings on a guitar - I don't like the sound and they tear up the frets. But I prefer them on most of my pedal steels. This is definitely a matter of personal taste. I think pickup choice may have something to do with my perceptions on this.

As far as friction goes - yes, stainless bar on stainless strings drag for me. Also brass slide on brass/bronze acoustic guitar strings make a lot of noise. But I haven't had any problem with a BJS or Zirc bar on any of them. There's always some drag no matter what I use, but I haven't found any serious issues with those bars.

Another option is Cobra Coil strings. Not exactly sure about the alloy. I have always assumed Brass, Cobalt, iron/steel, and probably some other stuff. Bobbe never did say exactly what, to my knowledge. I really do like them though - for me they sound somewhere in between nickel and stainless. Not dull at all, but not harsh either. And very smooth for me. I've actually thought about trying some for guitar just to see what they're like on a Tele.

YMMV and all that.

Right you are. I love the heavier nose on them. Great bar. Too bad he stopped making them.
