Has anyone tried a George L E-66 pickup on a GFI Ultra? If so, how did it sound? will it mount right up on a GFI? What other pickups (other than the stock ones) have you found that work good on a GFI Ultra?
I have a GFI and it just seems different then my Mullen and Emmons. I always have to do a lot more tweaking with the GFI to get a good tone. Just interested if anyone had this experience.

The stock GFI pickups are made by George L, so an E66 will definitely fit, but I’m not sure how much different it would be. Perhaps try a single coil if you’re looking for something different. |

Both of my GFI Ultra S12's, Have George L E-66's.
My Key Headed Ultra has a factory installed E-66. I bought the guitar from a friend, I know it came factory. One amp it comes out a little high on treble.
The keyless Ultra has a E-66 also. But I bought it used out of Ohio, Can't say it was factory or a change out job.
I have also heard that GFI Pickups are made by George L. |

According to the GFI web site, the GFI II is a "customized" E66. Probably not much difference between the two.
(I have Lawrence 710's on my GFI Ultra). |

i had GFI II GFI III, E66 and Wallace Truetone on my Ultra S 10.
Pickups are a matter of taste.
The brightest of the mentioned is the E6, it's still on the guitar for i liked it best.
for I'm tending to prefer a bright sounding cutting tone.
GFI III is pretty bright too, then come GFI II and True Tone, sounding more mellow.
On my main axe I changed from an E66 to a BL 705, that sounds even better to me. (recorded the guitar with both, so i could do a serious comparison.
Anyhow, if you're used to the sound of your Emmons and Mullen, (both similar built wood body guitars)you're probably good with the single coil Wallace. |

The Ultra D-10 I have came to me used through a trade and apparently several owners. It had an E66 on the E9th neck and a stock GFI II on the C6th neck. Between the two, I liked the GFI II the best. I was used to (and liked) the Lawrence 710's I had on a Franklin so I installed 710's on the GFI.
The GFI II is very close in sound to the Lawrence 710. Case in point, I had some steel tracking and did one track with the Franklin. Next day I needed to track steel on the other song but the Franklin was loaded in my car. At the time I also had a GFI Expo S-10 with a GFI II pickup. I tracked the 2nd song (only needed a short steel part) with the Expo S-10. I recorded it direct, the same way I did with the Franklin from Guitar to a D.I. box to the recording interface unit. Comparing the two only I would know which was the Franklin and which one was the GFI on those two steel tracks. |
