That is terrible news RIP Chick Corea.
Saw him in concert with Herbie Hancock in 2015 and had the audience singing along in 3 different parts like a choir which was inspiring. He made a comment that jazz audiences were good at singing in tune!
His music really made me think. I liked the middle eastern influence in a lot of his jazz fusion. Also his work with Weather Report.
I have a lot more listening to do of his music. It is sad that he is no longer with us |

Saw Chick and Gary Burton many years ago in Knoxville--great show. I think that their piano/vibe duets were among the best ever done.

His music inspired so many players across all genres, and is one of a few modern jazz artists that anyone could listen to and say yeah, I dig this.

Genius. He navigated every sub-genre of jazz with aplomb and is easily one of the greatest musicians of the past 60 years. Watching his videos during the pandemic was some of the most uplifting stuff that any musician did over that period of time. I can’t praise and thank him enough.

Saw him with Miles in the 70s at Shelley's Manne Hole in LA. He looked about 17, 18 years old (he wasn't).
Last night among the tributes I caught his 2-piano duet (in Germany) with Herbie Hancock. Incredible listening as well as playing. I recommend it.

I was so saddened to hear about his passing...His musicianship is still and was an enormous influence on my direction for pedal steel improvisations...After I recorded his epic "Spain" in the mid 70's I sent his publishing company a copy as is respectfully sent to the composer when their songs are recorded... Chick was so kind to respond to me personally which was totally unexpected...He went much farther than the song and encouraged me to stay the course saying he had no idea pedal steel could be played at this level...All of this to say while he was at the top of his game - setting the standards for Jazz Fusion he was also paying back to the community of musicians... I was just a sideman for Country artists and in the midst of his incredible career he took the time to inspire a young musician. It is my belief that his mark on the world of musicians is right up there with Parker, Dizzy, Miles, Evans, Coltrane, etc...What a jam session they will have...May God bless all of his family!

Nice story Paul, I was lucky to see Chick and the Elektric Band at Lincoln Center in the mid eighties, Stanley Clark was the opener. Great show!

Godspeed Chick.
Saw you with Herbie both on opposite sides of the stage back in the mid 70's.
With RTF you were a music force that would shape the things to come for generations on out.
You've returned to forever.

I went from Pre-Jan Hammer Jeff Beck into Mahavishnu with Hammer, and Chick and later Herbie, in that order. I came back to acoustic jazz via fusion and always had that electric thing happening. He was a major influence rhythmically and harmonically.
I am sure I saw Chick more than any other single jazz artist. Last time was The Electric Band at Bottom Line in NYC and it was a fantastic show.
He is at the top level of jazz composers and pianist on the forever list.
RIP Maestro.
