| I love how it starts out innocently enough - thinking yes yes of course, heard it a million times - then the 5th measure rolls along and, uhhh, yeah oookay, I’m still with ya....and by the first beat of the improvisation he’s in outer space. The phrasing and tone just kills. |

Has anyone else felt this?
I hear him play and, because he made relaxation a fine art, I almost feel that '...yes, I can do that!' Then, after I've sat at my guitar and my arms have that familiarly leaden sensation, I remember that I can't.
How does he DO that???

That is from the Gary Burton Tennessee Firebird sessions. It didn’t make the original LP but is a bonus track on the CD reissue. One thing that stuck me was BE’s warmer mellow tone, which I believe was not typical of him in 1966.
I think the great jazz players Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow make one of the worst bluegrass rhythm sections I have heard on this experimental session.

Really? To me, it only gets interesting when they start to open up and do their thing. Otherwise, it's just not very adventurous, bland versions of country standards. |
