How PU attaches /connects to body affects ...

Seems that Ive read here or there how a PU was screwed thru or attached to the body had a beneficial effect on tone/sustain/etc.
I have my National D8 all apart. Doing a rebuild( had to it was falling apart) and it occured to me to attach the PU's more solidly to the body via screws, down thru body in area where the base plate more or less floats after slipping in to the slot.
Anyway, can anyone offer anything on this subject?

The Emmons p/p is supposed to be the guitar with "that" tone. The pickup in this guitar is not attached directly to the body. The pickup is attached to the neck and this, in turn, is screwed down to the body. Some pedal stompers have even commented that these screws shouldn't be drawn down too tightly, either.

Steven,
If you attach the pickup directly to the body you may find you get some sounds from things clanking on the body of the steel coming through the pickup.

Someone once suggested using silicone rubber caulking to mount a pickup to PSG. Supposed to block out any changer noise. I tried it, and guitar had a major loss of sound dynamics. Went back to Emmons hard plastic strips.
