Hey folks, I recently purchased an MSA Classic D10 that I think had previously been converted to an SD10. It came to me with just the 3x4 E9 working. The C6 neck has no pedals or levers. About half of the missing parts came with it separately, but I think it will be a long time before I buy all the missing parts and restore it. I've never played C6 anyway, and have my hands full learning E9 stuff as it is. So I think I'd like to replace it with an arm rest.
I am wondering if anyone has any advice on making the arm pad. My plan so far was use a nice piece of plywood, round the edges just a bit, and cover it in some fabric or vinyl. Not sure if it is as simple as that though. Do people usually add any actual padding under the fabric? I feel like most pads are pretty stiff, and not pillowy. Just wondering if anyone has done this, and has specific advice. I have successfully tolexed some homemade cases before.
...and before folks that are opposed to SD conversions get mad, its basically half way there already, and I will keep all the parts in case I want to fully restore it eventually.
Thanks! |

I just did something like that with a Fender 1000 using the spongy kitchen mats from WalMart. Easy to cut to the size you need and they cost about $10 so you can afford to make mistakes! The neck will probably unbolt from the base so all you really need to do is cover that with something

You might try 3/4" foam rubber carpet padding glued to the plywood. If there is a 'Hobby Lobby' nearby, they have a large selection of vinyl material. |

This is the back rest I put on a S10 MSA about 1999.
With the 12 key head on old MSA's gives you a lot of space to make a great rest area for your picks and bars, I can lay my Steel bar and Nylon (DoBro) bar in this grove together when changing from one bar to the other.
I personally do not like a bunch of padding for your wrist and arm to bury down in. Just enough padding for comfort and a smooth surface you can slide up and down the neck on. You should have holes to attach the rest on your guitar, This one is attached with Velcro so it can be taken off to case the guitar.
You may even want to raise an area on the right side to support your right hand and wrist for comfort. |

Whoa whoa, hold on Kevin. I don't want to derail the thread, but I have questions! How did you rig those controls in the pad, what do they do, and how do you play with them? Don't they get in the way? I am so curious... _________________ Marlen S12 and a ZT Club |
