Can someone tell me what size of pot 250 ohm or 500 ohm is best for a lap steel? Going from guitar to echo pedal to amp.

Depends on guitar, pickup, taste, the pots have a different taper as well which affects the sound. The lower the value the less highs pass through is the easiest way to explain the sound.

On the 250K vs 500K question, I tend to go with 500K, figuring I can always turn the tone pot down.

Since a volume pedal pot will get a lot of use relative to the volume pot on the guitar, when I replaced a pot in a pedal a few years ago, I used a pot with a high ‘Rotational Life.’ As I recall, I used a Bourne 82A1D-Z28-BA0/254L. It works well. You can also find standard pots with high rotational life values, like a Bourne PDB232-E420K-504A2.

While you’re at it, put in a treble bleed circuit (Google it. Easy to do.) I use a 120K resistor and a 1 nF capacitor in series. This keeps the high frequencies in your tone as you turn down the volume.
