I know there's been questions on the Hip Shot Multiple Tuning Bridge. I just installed one on Francis DeSchamps SXL and wanted to share a couple of things.
When David first came out with the Hip Shot, we saw it on one of our Melobar 88's being used in their booth and they asked us to put them on stock, Dad had one of the first pedal steel patents (Melobar Story -Guitar Player March '85)and felt it was very difficult to insure the "in pitch" transition. So with that thinking, I have always told David that we will build our guitars so that the Trilogy could be added after market. The original Trilogy had a graphite bridge saddle that did not work well the first time I tried it. Now I have to make some comments here that the new Trilogy, with the new independent saddles, works VERY well.
There is enough adjustment to get each of the 3 positions to tune to pitch, simple, without springs or anything that heat and cold can effect. Very simple to bolt on and the independent saddles can easily be adjusted after the fact for intonation.
I do recommend it, I still will not install them stock, but would rather have the player buy it from David with instructions and warranty, but if you are looking for multiple tunings - it's the best available.
This guy has been at this for at least 20 years that I can remember and I felt he deserved a plug here. I have a picture of it on our site under the Specials, you can reach Hipshot at 800-262-5630.
my 2 Cents.

I purchased one from Dave about a year ago. Took a while to get. But, it's nice. Well made. I'm still building the body that it will go on , but the prototype body works great. Easily adjustable tunings. Once I have it finished I'll let you all know how it goes.
It will be interesting to try and figure out the string guages required to facilitate the various tunings. I'm only going to start with std. C6, and then have a setup for B11 and that should be pretty easy.

I got a Trilogy and it works well on my 6 string reso. Really well made and it tunes great, and I don't have a special bridge. I would recommend it to anyone who feels the need to explore the possibilites that "on the fly" tuning changes can offer. Just thinking about what can be done with this thing keeps me up at night.Very exciting !! |

Hey Ted, that was my Melobar!
Dave really does make excellent products. His dad is a machinist and inventor. Dave grew up in a machine shop playing banjo and dobro and pedal steel. Then he put it all those skills and interests together to our amazement. |
