I have a mid 70,' LDG. The right front hole in which to screw in the leg appears to be stripped to some extent. The threads seem to catch when you start screwing in the leg, but by the time the leg should be snug, it's not. The leg will not pull out of the hole completely, but it can't be tightened. This leaves the entire guitar very wobbly when the leg is inserted and the guitar is set up in the playing position.
Does anyone know of an easy do-it-yourself solution to this problem? I'm afraid that the solution might be to take off the end plate and have someone fill and recut the threads. If so, do any of you know of someone who could do that job? Thanks |

I had a similar problem about a year ago, took my ‘73 SHO~BUD to Jim P. In Oceanside.
My problem may not be as bad as yours but the cure seemed simple to fix my loose legs..
Jim slipped a washer onto the ends where the threads are, of proper size(?) Now legs snug up just fine, no more problem!
New legs might help too. _________________ Dana Blodgett

Are you sure its the threaded part on the body? I've seen many posts on here of the male threaded insert in the leg being loose. Some can be tightened and I've seen reports of drilling a hole and inserting a pin to hold it tight. |

If the problem is the threaded lug insert in the leg that goes into the end plate~which in my experience is real common~ you can drive it out and then what I do is support the center of it on the anvil part of my vise and enlarge the knurled part of it by using a punch and hammer around the diameter and then pressing it back in. The drilling and putting a pin in is just doesn't look right to me. |

As Jim suggested but I also add a little epoxy.

Thanks for the suggestions. The problem is present in that one single hole in the end plate into which the legs screw. All four legs screw into the other three endpin holes just fine and all of them behave the same in the "problem" hole. All of the threaded inserts on all of the legs are secure (I've dealt with that problem before). I'll try the trick with adding the washer to the leg insert before screwing it in. This is too good a guitar to become useless at this point. |

There's something they call a heli-coil that you can insert to re-establish the threads.

All four leg holes have heil-coils on my old Bud. They work great and easy to do yourself. _________________ Bolt On’s: Red Belly, Brown Belly, 73 Sho~Bud Pro~II, Fender’s/Peavey’s. If it doesn't sound like 1968, then I probably won’t like it. |

Had a similar problem with my Emmons SKH, wrapped plumbers teflon tape around the threads and so far, so good. Be certain to wind it counter clockwise. |

First measure the diameter of Male Threads on all 4 legs. Make sure the threads are the same.
try all 4 legs in each hole. Narrow it down to 1 bad leg, Or 1 bad female thread in The one leg socket hole. Some way 1 leg with the wrong threads may got in the set, Or you have bad threads in the 1 leg socket.
A Heli-coil would be a good repair option, But it will have to be set up proper to match the angle of the other legs for a proper repair.
Good Luck and Happy Steelin. |

Am having the same issue on my '76 Pro 3, with two of the holes. What size heli coil did you guys use? Thanks for posting this Jim, and please keep us posted on how you fixed it. |

The thread size for these and I believe most others are 1/2"-13. I also bought new legs for it because the plugs in the ends of the legs were also loose. Someone had tried to repair them with epoxy or something like JB Weld. It didn't work. |

It looks like a heli-coil is the solution for mine. I tried the teflon tape, but no luck. The thread on mine is 1/2 - 13. I just need to find someone with the expertise and equipment to drill out the hole in the end plate at the proper angle. Thanks for all the suggestions. |

I used to use Teflon tape to wrap the threads and seemed to work good. Always kept a couple of rolls in my seat! _________________ Rittenberry Prestige(2) |
