(SOLD off FORUM) Up for sale is a very nicely refinished, super clean early 60s (Pre-CBS) Fender Deluxe 8 console lap steel. It looks very close to the original walnut, with a prettier sleek varnish/stain through which the swamp ash wood grain can be seen (see pics). The scale length is 22.5" like all single neck Fender lap steels.
Excellent tone, blend wheel works great. This steel really sings, and can master all styles from a clean Hawaiian tone to a searing David Lindley lead run. Wonderful example of a pre-CBS Fender guitar. The only thing that really shows any signs of any wear on this steel is the fretboard, so--in the event you want to replace it, I have included in the sale an all new genuine aluminum repro fretboard with pre-drilled holes for tacks.
The OHSC is included and works just fine, though it's not nearly as pretty as the guitar (see pics). Works perfectly fine, tho the original handle is missing (these were really problematic/poorly designed). The divider for the legs is intact, but needs to be re-tacked to stay in place permanently if you somehow want to transport the legs without the guitar in the case (though I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that). Anyway, as I said, the case works just fine for transporting the guitar and all latches work.
Super nice guitar, great sound, hard-to-find steel in this shape. Sale: $1,550 +$25 shipping to anywhere in the lower 48. Will ship elsewhere--just ask.

That Case was usually made in the late 50's. What makes you think this is a early 60's deluxe?? Did you look under the tuning pan on the wood and see a date before whoever refinished it; or did that person write/record that info before refinish if his refinished that area got rid of pencil marks??

Those coffee tolex cases supposedly date from mid-'59 to '62. My '59 D-8 Stringmaster came to me in a tweed case. This website has a section on dating Fender guitar cases. I'm assuming that the steel guitar case changes would be similar to the six strings.

Yeah Bill you're right, come to think about it; I had a case that exactly like you posted but for my triple neck Stringmaster and it did say 10/62 under back tuning pan and only reason I bought it was because I was born in 1962...so I had to match..ha.....LOL
Anyway; nice refinish on that single-8; and seeing the wood figures is cool but also made me look further as "Swamp Ash" figures like that and regular "Ash Wood" they started using in the 60's didn't figure that much; is why I was thinking that was a swamp Ash from 50's.

Hey, guys!
There wasn't any date under the tuner pan. When I purchased the guitar it had been refinished, according to the original owner, because he didn't like the Walnut color.
However, it had been refinished horribly, with a thick poly over a garish yellow. The poly was an uneven thickness over the guitar and was bubbling in places. So I stripped it down to the bare wood (which is definitely swamp ash), sanded, stained, and sealed it with a few light coats of polyurethane.
The original owner told me he bought the guitar in '60-'61 (he wasn't sure).
All this to say that it could definitely be a '59-'60 guitar. Thanks for the kudos on the refi job, Ricky. This is the first time I did an entire guitar (just glad I remembered where all the pieces went and didn't have anything left over!).
