Here's my old Fender Deluxe 8 string.
Early 50's. I see no serial numbers.
Trapezoid pickup . Beautiful sound.....

Look in the tuner well between the 6th and 7th tuners: 296? 298? 398? I think this era Deluxe is the only model that used this location for a s/n.

I have one of these with a serial number of 453 on the pan, and it has a 9-12-52 date and Tadeo Gomez sig under the tuner pan. It looks like yours says 396.
Either way, these are early, I think by 55 they were the later looking ones without the trapezoid pup, the ones that continue into the 60s.
GLWS, I love mine, it's a walnut color. If those knobs are original, don't let anyone swindle you out of them. The knobs on my (otherwise totally original) '52 were pilfered somewhere in time, probably to put on an old Tele. |

I think the early ones had boxcar pickups and fret boards with roman numerals.

Yeah, there are those, which are even earlier.
I think those were from '48? Maybe up till late 51?
Those were Fender and Kauffman at first, then labeled as only Fender. |

Good luck on the sale! That blonde looks great in the single neck, good case too.
As for the discussion going on, I don’t know if those serial numbers mean anything like the Dual Professionals or Customs, depending on how many were made, if so that would be there are only about 1000, I imagine they might have been the last 3 of whatever batch was going out? Mine is an April of 55’ Gloria and it’s stamped 856 in the tuner pan. They made this model into late 55’ just in time for the last few to get a spaghetti badge. Stringmaster eclipsed the trap pickup models, but they were both made and sold in 54’ & 55’.

The scale length is 22 1/4"
The serial numbers stamped in the tuner can: 206
There is no case , just a newer Fender gig bag.
Maybe it looks like a proper case in my photos ?

I really don't want to remove the can to search for writing or whatever. The screws are perfect . I'd hate to mess up the beautiful slot head screws.

**** It's been pointed out to me this pickup maybe rewound.
The person I bought this guitar from awhile ago told me " it had been repaired " in that he noticed the solder on the back of the pot was reflowed.
I'm not sure, but there's new solder under the pickup and the wire leads look new (?)
The guitar sounds excellent.
I apologize for any confusion .
I'll knock off a couple hundred on the price.

| The nuts don't look like they have been removed. I think the solder was reflowed at the baseplate ground , and at the tone pot can . |
