A friend who is not a SGF member has an MCI with a Barcus Berry pickup, and isn’t happy with the tone. He’s not very specific about what it needs, he just doesn’t like it. What have you guys used in place of the original pickups?

Well, the other original pickups in MCI was the orig. chrome 705 but they're as scarce as toilet paper in 2020.

The MCI RangExpander I bought after several turn overs a few years ago, came to me with George L's 10-1. I'm not a particular fan of GL pickups, but they worked well in that guitar.

Maybe a pair of new production 705s? The old chrome 705's sound fantastic in my MCI.

FWIW- the E66 was developed by George Lewis(Geo L) and Buddy Emmons trying to duplicate the sound of his '66 pushpull on an EMCI- the descendant of the MCI.

I swapped out my original Barcus Berry's not long after I got my MCI Rangexpander new in 1986, with GL E66's and it was like someone had taken a blanket off the amp !!

I have Telonics 409's on that guitar now and it is about as good as it gets tone-wise !

The new 705’s are electronically made the same as chrome older ones and sound just as good. They just not as pretty.

My S10 came with the BB pup Sad so I replaced it with an E66 from Jim Palenscar. Very happy!
