I'm bummed about this as well, got to meet Billy Joe in Austin and got a nice picture with him.

I saw Billy Joe play in Marin County in 2009. My ex and I had just decided to get divorced and I was in a pretty dark place. A good friend invited me to the show at the last minute and it's a good thing I went. That show completely turned my head around. Song after song, story after story. He entertained, gave me new perspectives, sang to me of humility and growth as well as insanity and stubbornness and tied it all together into an appropriately complicated and beautiful picture of life. It's interesting to me that the songwriters that I find most uplifting are also the songwriters that look the darkness right in the face and explore it.
He would have been a hell of a preacher in another lifetime. We were so lucky to have him. He was truly special. |

He was married to my cousin Brenda.
I never got to know Billy Joe very well. He seemed like one of those guys that would live forever. He will finally be with Brenda and Eddie on the other side.
Billy Joe was a Texas treasure. At least in my mind he was.

I Love that song I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal. I first heard John Anderson's version of it years ago it is very catchy.
Billie Joe was a great songwriter.
Honky Tonk Heroes with Waylon is also great
I always thought I would see him in concert someday, but never did.I think he was last in Australia around 1991 with Steve Young (another under-rated Outlaw).
Some of his music with Eddie was fantastic too
